I wish I could say I can't believe that the Prop 8 proponents have to resort to outright lies to get people to vote their way, but I can't. They know that the people of California don't really care who gets married. Live and let live. So the Yes on 8 campaign has to use fear tactics to scare them into voting for it. Here is what they are saying in their new Television ad that came out today.
People will be sued over their personal beliefs - Lie! California law already prohibits discrimination basis on sexual orientation so this law would have no effect on that.
Churches could lose their tax exempt status. - Lie! No church has to marry anyone they don't want to. That is true today and this law does not change anything. The court decision specifically says “no religion will be required to change its religious policies or practices with regard to same-sex couples, and no religious officiant will be required to solemnize a marriage in contravention of his or her religious beliefs.”
Same-sex marriage will be taught in public schools.- Lie! No child in California can be forced, against the will of their parents, to be taught anything about health and family issues at school. California law prohibits it.
I know most of the people who read my blog are my friends and care about Kari and I. Please tell everyone you know that these scare tactics are just plain lies and that Kari and my marriage will not affect anyone except me and Kari and more importantly Elisa and Frankie.
It tore my heart out when Elisa came home and told us that a girl as school told her that her mom's aren't married and that Kari and I are illegal and she wanted to know if we could go to jail. I don't want these people making my daughters think there is something bad or wrong with our family.

Not that I expect much else from bigots. But this is further proof that the truth is on our side.
At first when I read about what that little girl said to Elisa, I found myself mad at a little girl. Then it occurred to me that it's not her fault; she likely heard those lies at home from people she trusts who just happen to be ignorant.
We have to make sure this thing is defeated! Our church has been phone banking for No on 8 nearly every night; we need to sign up. Last Sunday, Jorge and I joined folks from church on a busy street corner in Walnut Creek waiving signs and what not. It was just like you and I back in '92; only this time, it's really hitting close to home. Our reception was pretty good considering Walnut Creek is pretty conservative. We only had a few folks give us thumbs down but got lots of honks and thumbs up. It's all of those cars in which people didn't react at all that worry me. How are they gonna vote?

Thank you for this moving post.
Just a note to let you know I enjoyed reading it and have linked to it from my place.
"The [Yes on 8] advertisement, while not compelling, will likely speak to the concerns of people already supporting the ballot initiative." (The Advocate)
That sounds about right, and considering that opponents appear to be outnumbering supporters at this point, it would suggest that this ad will do down as another wasted effort from the Yes on 8 side.
